Lezhë, Shkodër, Theth and Valbona belong to the same northern story, but they do not fit into one rushed day. This guide explains the order, the road reality and where to slow down.
Begin with Lezhë, not just a fuel stop
The castle and Skanderbeg memorial introduce the northern plain before the mountains arrive. Pair them with Shëngjin or the lagoon, then continue to Shkodër without hurrying.
Give Shkodër its own time
Rozafa, the Marubi photographic archive, the pedestrian centre and Shirokë are not transfer-room attractions. A night here makes the journey into the Alps calmer and culturally richer.
Choose Theth for village paths and the western approach
The Qafë Thore road delivers one of Albania’s great landscape reveals. Theth works for waterfalls, stone homes and valley walks that can be adjusted to weather.
Choose Valbona for scale and deep-valley quiet
Valbona is reached from the north-east, not by a quick road from Theth. The valley rewards guesthouse time, Rragam walks and travellers who enjoy the long approach.
The Theth–Valbona pass is a hike, not a transfer
The high crossing is seasonal, weather-dependent and requires luggage planning. Outside hiking months, visit the valleys as separate road journeys rather than forcing an unsafe connection.
